Been There

The Journey

A map drawn by people who’ve walked it

This is a broad, human map — not a medical treatment pathway. Protocols differ by diagnosis and by person. Some people skip stages, repeat them, or follow a very different path. Your oncology team is the guide for your treatment plan.

Lived experience, not medical advice

Been There shares lived experiences, not medical advice. Treatment decisions and urgent medical concerns belong with your oncology team.

  1. 1

    Just diagnosed

Shock, a flood of new words, and decisions made fast. Families often say they remember very little of these days.

  2. 2

    Early treatment / induction

For many diagnoses, an intense first phase. Learning hospital rhythms, new medicines and a new normal.

  3. 3

    Ongoing treatment

The long middle. Routines, admissions, school or work juggling, and finding moments of ordinary life.

  4. 4

    Maintenance (when applicable)

Some protocols (like many leukemia protocols) include a longer, lower-intensity phase. Many do not.

  5. 5

    Finishing treatment

The last treatment, and the complicated feelings that can come with stepping back from the team.

  6. 6

    Survivorship & life afterward

Follow-up care, relationships, late effects clinics — and for some families, grief and remembering.
